Termites aren’t just a menace to houses; they can wreak havoc on trees as well, often building their nests inside. Detecting termite infestations can be difficult, especially with subterranean termites that live entirely underground. They often build their nests inside the trunk of a tree and eat away at the middle, leaving only a hollow shell. These trees can pose a serious hazard. Early identification can prevent significant damage and even save your trees. Here’s what to look out for:
Tap the tree trunk or branches. If they sound hollow, termites may have chewed through the inside of the wood, leaving an empty shell.
Termites often build mud tubes along the bark or exposed roots. These tubes help them travel and stay protected while accessing food sources.
Keep an eye out for small piles of wood-coloured pellets near the base of your tree. These droppings, called frass, are a clear indicator of termite activity.
If branches break easily or appear brittle, termites may have eaten through them, weakening their structure.
Spotting winged termites (swarmers) or discarded wings near your tree is a strong sign of an active infestation.
Termites often chew away at bark or leave small entry holes in the wood. Bark peeling away unexpectedly could signal their presence.
Ignoring termites can lead to tree instability and increase the risk of falling trees or branches, posing a danger to people and property.
